Manchester United took a step towards securing qualification for next season’s Champions League with victory over Bournemouth.
United travelled to the Vitality Stadium for their last away day of the campaign as Erik ten Hag’s outfit remain in the fight to secure a place in Europe’s top club competition. And they ended up taking a big step thanks to Casemiro’s overhead kick in the first half which sealed a 1-0 triumph.
The win, combined with fifth placed Liverpool only drawing at Anfield against Aston Villa, means United are now three points clear of Jurgen Klopp’s outfit. United also have a game in hand over their rivals.
The game in hand United have will be at Old Trafford on Thursday evening when they take on Chelsea. United know that a point from one of their final two encounters of the top flight season will secure a place back in the Champions League.
Ten Hag’s side are level on points with Newcastle United, but the Magpies are ahead of United on goal difference. Eddie Howe’s men host relegation-threatened Leicester City on Thursday when United host Chelsea, who have had a dismal season and will finish in the bottom half of the table.
Ahead of the encounter at Old Trafford, it remains to be seen if top scorer Marcus Rashford will be fit to feature against the Stamford Bridge outift. There is also the question of the ongoing sale of United by the Glazer family, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani lodging bids – we’ll bring you any updates on any of these subjects in today’s live blog.
Today’s big talking point: Has Luke Shaw’s form this season done Erik ten Hag a favour in the transfer window this summer? Have your say here.

What United need for the top four
Manchester United have a simple to ask to qualify for the Champions League as they bid to finish in the Premier League top-four.
Newcastle United secured their place among Europe’s elite with a 0-0 draw with relegation threatened Leicester City on Monday night. The Magpies were unable to break down the Foxes and the game ended 0-0. To finish third, Manchester United need to win both of their final two matches. They currently trail Newcastle by a point but have a game in hand.
If they were to beat Chelsea on Thursday, they would just need to match Newcastle’s result on the final day of the season. Because of their inferior goal difference, they have to finish ahead of the Magpies on points.

Latest transfer rumours
Manchester United have made contract with Paris Saint-Germain about signing Neymar, according to reports.
The Brazilian winger could be available for a move this summer and has been linked with a move to the Premier League. The latest reports from French newspaper L’Equipe claim that United are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign the wide man and also states fellow countrymen Casemiro has been in touch with Neymar about a move.
United have Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes who operate in Neymar’s position. A deal would no doubt come at great financial cost and with a number nine the transfer priority, any deal would come as a surprise.

Timber future admission
“I met him (Mislintat) here at De Toekomst and then we spoke briefly and one-on-one. He spoke longer with my agent. As far as I know, Ajax wants to keep me here,” he told Algemeen Dagblad.
“Beyond that, I can hardly say anything about it. Talks about that will probably follow soon. Actually, I am now in the same situation as last year. I don’t know yet whether I will make that step now. I’m happy to be at Ajax – here you can always show yourself.”

Casemiro’s ‘role’
More on Neymar. The report sates that Casemiro has been involved in trying to broker the deal. Of course, the pair know each other from the Brazil national team.

‘Advanced’ Neymar talks
L’Equipe in France claim that Manchester United are in ‘advanced’ talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Neymar.
One we have seen before but it feels highly unlikely that United would make a move for the 31-year-old.

United ‘told’ eye-watering price of Osimhen
United will reportedly have to fork out £130m to bring Victor Osimhen to Old Trafford.
The Napoli striker is on Erik ten Hag’s summer transfer shortlist, albeit Harry Kane is the primary target.
However, the 24-year-old would not be a cheap secondary option to the England captain with the Daily Mail claiming Osimhen will cost £130m.
It adds that the club are also tracking Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic with Chelsea also in the market for both players.

United players did what Fernandes asked them to vs Bournemouth
Bruno Fernandes urged his Manchester United teammates to ‘do their job’ against Bournemouth and the Reds are now within touching distance of securing a top-four place after heeding his message.
United took a huge step towards qualification for next season’s Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, with Casemiro’s brilliantly-improvised overhead kick enough to hand the Reds a first away win since mid-April.
Erik ten Hag’s side were within minutes of having a top-four place confirmed, with Liverpool behind at home to Aston Villa until Roberto Firmino levelled the scoreline in the 89th minute – a gap that was set to be four points is now three.

OGC Nice club captain Dante says there has been a lack of clarity about the direction owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants the club to head in amid several fan boycotts.

United stars Casemiro, Antony and Sancho send messages to Vinicius Jr
Manchester United’s Brazilian trio Casemiro, Fred and Antony are among those to send messages of support to Vinicius Jr after he was racially abused during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat at Valencia.
On Sunday, the winger was targeted by a section of the home supporters with racist chants. Vinicius Jr had attempted to bring the referee’s attention to the abuse but his complaints fell on deaf ears.
The 22-year-old was sent off deep into second half stoppage time after an altercation with Valencia’s Hugo Duro.
After the final whistle, the forward published a statement on Instagram declaring La Liga as ‘belonging to racists’.

West Ham target ‘Wan-Bissaka’
West Ham have set their sights on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, according to the Daily Mail.
The right-back has enjoyed a resurgence during the second half of the season, and is now Erik ten Hag’s first-choice right-back.
However, his future remains undecided with United in talks for Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen, who plays in the same position.
United are working on a new deal for Diogo Dalot, meaning Wan-Bissaka could leave to avoid losing game time.

Lindelof ‘quite unhappy’ at United
A report from InterLive has mooted that Victor Lindelof is ‘quite unhappy’ with his position in the pecking order at United.
The defender has started the last nine matches due to injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
He is likely to start the FA Cup final with Martinez out for the season. However, his future at United is unclear with the Sweden captain not among Erik ten Hag’s first XI picks.
Lindelof admitted in March that he would be “assessing his options” this summer.

Shaw has become the United defender Jose Mourinho wanted
When the spiral started at Manchester United last season Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were culpable so often they seemed conjoined.
Privately, Shaw felt he was exposed amid his willingness to cover for Maguire. A confidant advised Shaw to be more selfish.
There is scant evidence of selfishness throughout Shaw’s eight years with United. He has regained form this season, arguably his best two terms on from his stellar 2020-21 campaign.

Jack Butland on David de Gea
Speaking to club media, the Crystal Palace loanee goalkeeper said:
“He’s [De Gea] been great for me since I’ve come in, been really positive and helpful, and I’ve enjoyed working with him. So it’s been good fun and he deserves it.
“I think it might be his second Golden Glove. I’m surprised he hasn’t had more, but such is the quality of the league. He’s a top goalkeeper, he deserves it and he’s been vitally important in those clean sheets.
“Where we’re at in the league right now, he’s played a big part in that and he fully deserves the Golden Glove.”

OPINION: United have four transfer priorities in 18 months to get closer to City
“The squad needs greater depth, and the attack has to become more fluid, but there are also some positions where an upgrade is obvious. A title challenge might be beyond United next season, but after two more summer transfer windows, they should have no excuses. By then Erik ten Hag will have moulded this squad into his own image and the players will have a greater understanding of his methods and his ethos. Year three should be United’s peak under Ten Hag.”

OPINION: Casemiro is proving why United must give Ten Hag what he needs this summer
“When you dive a little deeper into the statistics relating to United’s attacking output this term, you soon discover that Casemiro has been one of their most potent attackers. After scoring the winner at Bournemouth, he has now chipped in with six goals and six assists this season, meaning only Rashford and Fernandes have more direct goal contributions this term than the Brazilian’s tally of 12. Fred, Antony and Martial all have 11 when you combine their goals and assists tallies, meaning Casemiro has been United’s third most successful attacker this season. Considering he was added to Erik ten Hag’s squad to offer a much-needed defensive presence in midfield last August, it is a statistic that is quite hard to overlook.”

Atalanta manager blames United interest for dip in Hojlund form
Atalanta chief Gian Piero Gasperini has suggested that interest from United in Rasmus Hojlund led to his form suffering this season.
Hojlund scored his 15th goal of the season, across his time in Italy and Austria, on Saturday during the 3-1 victory over Verona in Serie A. That, however, marked his first goal since March.

OPINION: Shaw has helped United streamline their transfer plans
“Thanks to Luke Shaw, United don’t urgently need to strengthen in central defence. A lot of experienced central defenders could be on their way out of Old Trafford this summer. We already know that Phil Jones is leaving and is set to be followed out of the door by Axel Tuanzebe. Eric Bailly has spent the season out on loan at Marseille and has a contract until the summer of 2024, with the option of another 12 months on top of that. He is clearly surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and his sale could bring in much needed funds.”

OPINION: Amad can fill two roles for United next season
“Sunderland are blessed with creativity in the wide areas, meaning Mowbray, in an attempt to get Patrick Roberts, Jack Clarke and Amad on the pitch at the same time, had to test the water and experiment. Roberts, formerly of Manchester City, is most dangerous on the right, meaning Amad tucked inside and operated as a No.10. As the statistics highlight, he flourished in that position, meaning United manager Erik ten Hag, who plans to welcome Amad back into his squad ahead of next season, could see what he is capable of from a central area in United colours.”

Ten Hag plays down Martial rift
Erik ten Hag has quashed suggestions of a rift between himself and Anthony Martial after the latter was substituted during the second half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
The Frenchman was taken off just before the hour mark and was replaced by Wout Weghorst. He walked straight down the tunnel after going off, prompting suggestions that he was furious with Ten Hag for being taken off. However, the Dutchman has suggested that was not the case at all.

OPINION: Martial just agreed with biggest criticism of United this season
“United moved beyond the 50-goal mark against Wolves but they remain well short of the rate their rivals at the top score at, with Manchester City (92), Arsenal (83), Newcastle (67) and Liverpool (60) not struggling to put opponents to the sword. Marcus Rashford has shouldered the scoring burden for the majority of the campaign, scoring 29 of United’s 100 goals in all competitions, which makes his absence for any match a genuine concern.”

What United need to wrap up a top four spot
Despite Liverpool’s last-gasp leveller against Aston Villa on Saturday delaying United’s return to the Champions League, they can almost reach out and touch it.
The Reds need just one more point from their last two games to be assured of a top four finish and Champions League qualification for next season. They face Chelsea on Thursday night and then Fulham on Sunday, both at Old Trafford.
Newcastle United also need just a point to get the job done, meaning they will secure a fairytale return to Europe’s premier club competition if they avoid defeat to Leicester City at St James’ Park tonight.

Manchester United put two past City to earn their first-ever win over their local rivals in club history at the top tier. Lucia Garcia nudged the ball into the back of the net in stoppage time to clinch the three points and keep the Reds’ title dreams alive.

The record-breaking crowd, all 7,864 fans at Leigh Sports Village were electrifying as the Reds continued to dominate their visitors the entire evening. Unwilling to give them an inch. City did have chances but were denied by Earps and the woodwork twice before finding the back of the net.
